Hi Peter
There was good reason for the delay, I was taken to hospital 2 days later!!!! I would hasten to add that it was not related to our visit to the trowel & Hammer!

We visited on Thursday 22nd March with neighbours who had been before and were impressed. The evening didn't start off well with one of the 'specials' not being available but still being shown on the board and also a chosen main course from the a la carte menu was not available. Our neighbours recommended the burger as an alternative choice and given that the description was 'home made' three of us decided to order. Well, what a disappointment! What we were served with was pre-formed, completely tasteless and luke warm. We should have complained there and then but given that our neighbours were treating us we did not want to embarrass them or us. The next day our neighbour called at the pub to voice his discontent and was treated in a most off hand manner, hardly good customer service. He was promised a call from management but guess what, it never came. We were impressed with the pub itself and hoped that we had found an alternative eating place within a resonable distance. Such a shame as we have obviously relayed our experience to friends and neighbours. We accept that in a service industry sometimes people get it wrong, it takes good management and dedicated customer focus to put it right.

What a nice english pub, bar food was great and not overly priced. Staff were attentive and decor was just what you would expect great open fire.

I haven't visited this pub for some time as I didn't know it had re-opened, but on passing by chance with my wife we decided to pop in for a meal, we did have to wait for a table but the food was worth the wait.

went there for their steak night, decor was nice but over the top, food seemed nice and decent priced, BUT the staff was rude and slow, the beer was decent but overpriced, and although I asked for my steak to be well done, it came out with red juices flowing and I ended up ill for two days from food poisoning!

Steve McQueen and his team have totally transformed the Trowel in the last few months from what had been a barely functioning boozer into a warm and friendly pub/restaurant that provides good value for money. It may not be to everyones taste but their is no way that you could describe the staff as unfriendly or not caring. I am a regular and have seen how the Trowel was allowed to deteriorate over the past 5 years and compared with then it is an oasis in the desert.

We visited the Trowel & Hammer for the 1st time on Sunday 4th September. What a delightful pub, friendly staff and high quality food. The rear garden was clean & tidy and the whole experience was a pleasure. We'll be back as soon as possible. We live a few miles away and have visited many other pubs, with disappointing results, so at last we've found a good one. Thank you all!!!

I used to love the Trowel but I have been in twice for a drink recently and found the owners and staff to be rude and snotty. I felt they looked down on everyone. Also, the new carpet is atrocious.

I am very suprised at the difference in reviews below, either extremely positive or extremely negative! Personally, myself and my family have eaten in the Trowel & Hammer several times since the new landlords took over and have found the food to be of excellent quality. The menu choices are extensive and we could barely finish our meals as the portion sizes were so generous. Definately value for money and we have recommended it to several of our friends who have also loved the food and atmosphere. Our children were made very welcome and the staff have always been extremely helpful and obliging and we will continue to frequent the Trowel & Hammer. Thankyou for bringing this fantastic pub back to life.

Having just read the last few reviews I feel I must respond. My husband and I started going to the Trowel when Nick and Steve first took over. I have to say we were very impressed by their enthusiasm and friendliness .The food was always very hit and miss but it was a welcome addition to our local area after the demise of the Bull at Bacton ( now re-opened with lovely new tenants).Sadly this was not to last.
On several occassions we booked events only to be let down(bookings forgotton completely or no food or drink!) Having decided enough was enough I spoke up. Suffice to say we are no longer welcome in the Trowel!! We have been treated very badly on more than one occassion and would go so far as to say felt threatened by Steve, the chef.I understand from some staff members and other customers this is not uncommon.
What a shame that a pub which appeared to have so much to offer has become such a disappointment .

Get that lovely looking pool open. I want to swim and sunbathe on the grass by with a beer. Then this pub will probably be the best in Suffolk. Even without the pool, my wife & I celebrated our anniversay outside in spacious garden under covered pergola (probably for weddings). This pub had gastro food, but opted for bar menu. Food was divine (and my wife & I really enjoy our food) and served on sensible but modern plates. Can strongly recommend the Scouse Pie, Chicken Burger, Chicken & Bacon Salad and Deep Fried Camenbert. I'd recommend more but thats all we could manage. (Portions were probably a bit too big, but good value). Friendly and unobtrusive service, brought drinks to our table. Quiet background music. Ample tables and parking. Well worth a drive from Ipswich, especially if they get the pool open, then I'd've gladly driven further.

I visited the Trowel and Hammer recently a couple of times for lunch... It was the first time since the pub has re-opened with new owners.
I was not very impressed with the quality of the food!.... The chips had black bits stuck on them and the coffee came in a tea pot (which I thought was very strange). The food took quite a long time to arrive, and had to ask for sauces etc. The almighty burger is far too big; the coleslaw making it wet and sloppy.

It was very dark and dreary looking; freezing too! The music was terrible. I went to sit outside, but had to come in as it was soooo loud.

The new owners need to change a few things, as the staff didn't seem to really know what was going on!

The Trowell looks set to become the destination pub in the area once again. It is an amazing rebirth after so many years in the doldrums. I think it will hit the heights under Steve and Nick. They deserve every success for the effort they makIng in the bar and in the kitchen, besides which they are great people.

I visited the Trowel & Hammer last night and I can honestly say for a first night opening under new owners it was an absolutley wonderful experience. The management could not do enough and the food was excellent. Lets hope these warm people have great success and keep moving the pub onwards and upwards! Great for the community and vistors alike.
